MENTAL DISORDERS
Mental disorders pose one of the biggest health
challenges today. One out of five suffers from
mental disorders. The trend is rising. The common
causes, apart from biological causes, are setbacks
in life, grief, poor coping skills, faulty upbringing,
high pace & high demands of modern life, complex
social structure, rapidly changing human values,
lack of role models, poor support system, influence
of media etc.
There
are many different categories of mental disorder,
and many different facets of human behavior and
personality that can become disordered. The causes
of mental disorders are generally complex
and vary depending on the particular disorder and
the individual. Although the causes of some mental
disorders are unknown, it has been found that different
Biological, Psychological, and Environmental Factors
can all contribute to the development of mental
disorders. Most mental disorders are a result of
a combination of several different factors rather
than just a single factor. Till now mental illness
such as depression and schizophrenia was believed
to be caused by problematic relationships between
children and their parents but more recent view
is that mental disorders tend to result from genetic
dispositions and environmental stressors.
Our society is changing fast
and the demands are challenging. These demands
call for in-depth acceptance and constant adjustments.
Modes of communication are rising but true communication
is lacking. More and more people feel misunderstood,
alone and unwanted. Emotions are unsatisfied and
mind management skills are lacking. Everything
happening at personal, social, professional or
day to day life has profound psychological impact.
Job stress and poor interpersonal skills at both
social and family level are showing its effect
on mental level.
This affects people’s ability to think, feel, act
in effective manner. This affects the happiness
and progress in life, so psychological complaints
are rising alarmingly. And to add to these factors
now a day there are many new diseases coming up
in body. Body resistance power is diminished. The
world needs a healing system, which has safe and
effective treatment for such complaints. The answer
lies in homeopathy. It is the most safe and effective
treatment method of psychological, psycho somatic
and psychosexual complaints. Psychotherapy and
psychiatric medication are two treatment options
mostly resorted to but they alone cannot give full
and complete cure.
There
are no medical or scientific tests that can prove
mental disorders are medical conditions. Psychiatric
diagnosis is based solely on opinion. People experience
depression, anxiety and sadness, some people can
become irrational and/or psychotic but this doesn’t
make them ‘diseased’
There are no genetic tests, no brain scans, blood
tests, chemical imbalance tests or X-rays that
can scientifically/medically prove any mental disorder
is a medical condition.
DIFFERENT MENTAL DISORDER
Bi-Polar, Schizophrenia, ADHD, Social Anxiety Disorder,
Depression – these are all psychiatric labels.
People are being labeled based not on medical tests,
only on psychiatric opinion. These labels are problematic
for numerous reasons. The first of which is that
these labels become part of their permanent medical
records and for many many years they are treated
on these lines only
Common disorder include specific phobias, generalized
anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic
disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic
stress disorder. Mood disorder, major depression
and Bipolar disorder are also in this category.
Disorders
of belief and perception of reality can also become
mental disorder e.g., delusions, thought disorder,
hallucinations. Schizophrenia and delusional disorder
are called psychotic disorders.
Eating disorders
involve disproportionate eating (obesity), Sleep
disorders, Sexual disorders may be are considered
mental disorders.
People who are abnormally unable to resist certain
urges or impulses that could be harmful are also
mental disorder. The use of drugs- drug additions
- (legal or illegal, including alcohol), when it
persists despite significant problems is also a
mental disorder.
People who suffer severe disturbances of their
self-identity, memory and general awareness of
themselves and their surroundings is called having
a dissociative identity disorder.
A range of developmental disorders that initially
occur in childhood, and continue into adulthood
are called dissocial personality disorder.
Premenstrual syndromes also come under mental disorder.
Some mental disorders can also have above-average
creativity, meticulousness, or empathy. Some of
the genius in history had mental disorders.
CAUSES
There are a number of theories or models seeking
to explain the causes (etiology) of mental disorders.
Mental disorders can arise from multiple sources,
and in many cases there is no single cause. It
incorporates biological, psychological and social
factors.
The most common view is that disorders tend to
result from genetic dispositions and environmental
stressors, combining to cause patterns of distress
or dysfunction or, more sharply, trigger disorders
Biological psychiatry mentions mental disorders
are disorders of brain circuits likely to be caused
by developmental processes and a complex interplay
of genetics. A common assumption is that disorders
may have resulted from genetic and developmental
disharmony, exposed by stress in development. Many
types of mental disorder are now viewed as primarily
neuro-development disorders.
Social disorder and disability
also play a part. Many factors like abuse, neglect,
bullying, social stress, other negative or overwhelming
life experiences etc… can cause mental disorders.
Some chronic general medical
conditions and poorer general health has been found
among individuals with severe mental illnesses.
Abnormal functioning of neurotransmitter
like serotonin, nor-epinephrine, dopamine and glutamate
systems and others, has been cause in several mental
disorders.
Serious psychological stress or
trauma, birth complications, infections, and exposure
to alcohol or cocaine., thought to be due to direct
and indirect factors.
Drug like cannabis, alcohol and
caffeine damage "white
matter" in the brain which affects thinking
and memory and produce mental disorder. The impact
that a traumatic event has on an individual varies
from individual to individual in producing mental
disorder. Stresses and strains related to socioeconomic
position have been linked to the occurrence of
major mental disorders, with a lower or more insecure
educational, occupational, economic or social position.
CONSIDERATIONS IN MANAGEMENTS
Most of the Psychiatric drugs have toxicities and side effects are
major considerations in managing mental disorder. More
than 470,000 adverse reactions to psychiatric
drugs are on file with the US FDA. It is not
possible to write all drugs side effects and
toxicity.
There
are differences when treating mental disorders.
You need to be able to set aside your biases and
be non-critical and non-judgmental. You need to
treat the patient with respect.
All problems are due to a disturbance of the vital
force,
Once you are label with mental disorder you are
now for life time with this label, which is based
solely on opinion, and now this becomes part of
your medical record, despite the fact there is
no medical evidence to prove you are “mentally
ill” and you do not have a mental “illness.” The
same is true of all psychiatric diagnoses. Psychiatric
diagnoses are simply lists of behaviors that psychiatrists
have compiled into little lists, given a name,
and added “disorder” on the end.
There are non-harmful, non-drug solutions to treating
problems of mood or behavior and can be effectively
treated with standard medical treatment.
MANAGEMENT
There are a range of different types of treatment
and what is most suitable depends on the disorder
and on the individual.
A holistic approach (combining of all alternative)
for prevention and cure of mental ailments is by
far the most meaningful and fulfilling effort that
we can undertake. The holistic approach enables
us to become aware of the totality of the person
and thus makes it possible to formulate a strategy
for treatment. The main elements of the holistic
approach are Homeopathy and adjuvant Alternative
therapies, Counseling and Spiritual or Energy healing.
Homeopathic medicine works differently. It stimulates
the person’s innate ability to restore natural
balance. For example, if the patient is not readily
producing sufficient, homeopathic medicine can
stimulate the body to actually push to convert
more serotonin. If the person is overproducing
adrenaline and feeling anxious, the homeopathic
medicine can help to regulate this overproduction
and normalize mood.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
For many mental disorders psychotherapy is the
important line of treatment. There are several
main types. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
is widely used and is based on modifying the patterns
of thought and behavior. Some psychotherapy is
based on a humanistic approach. There are a number
of specific psychotherapies used for particular
disorders. Integrative approach is must.
MEDICATION
Psychiatric
medications has several main groups. Antidepressants
- Anxiolytics - sedatives - Mood stabilizers -
Antipsychotics - Stimulants and many other sub
groups.
Adverse effects of medication and adherence - habit
to them are main problems. There are problems of
frequent lack of effectiveness and harmful side
effects of psychotropic medications
Much criticism of pharmaceutical marketing and
professional conflicts of interest is against the
psychiatric drugs. For various disorders many drugs
are prescribed which actually are harmful to the
brain.
OTHER MEASURES
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
which was thought not useful has recently come
up again.
Counseling (professional) and
co-counseling (between peers) are the major aspects
on which we can depend. Psychoeducation programs
may provide people with the information to understand
and manage their problems. Creative therapies like
hypnotherapy and NLP can produce good results in
indicated disorders.
Lifestyle adjustments and supportive
measures are often used. Reasonable accommodations
(adjustments and supports) might help an individual
and succeed in disorders.
Homeopathy and Mental Health
Menninger, 1897 of the American Institute of Homeopathy
has quoted his saying, "Homeopathy is wholly
capable of satisfying the therapeutic demands better
than any other system of medicine." "It
is imperative that we should treat the homeopathic
healing art before resorting to any other mode
of treatment, if we wish to accomplish the greatest
success possible."
Davidson (1994) - father of modern medicine and
renowned medicine expert - has noted that there
are similarities between modern psychiatry and
homeopathy. In his article Davidson discusses other
points such as the self-healing principle, the
micro dose effect, disappearance of the symptoms
in reverse order of their appearance, and diagnosis
by pattern recognition of the symptoms.
Recent
neurobiological researches also validate homeopathic
concepts.
The researchers - Kleijnen, 1991
- concluded that, " more
than sufficient amount of positive evidence for
establishing homeopathy as a regular treatment
for certain psychiatric indications". He showed
that homeopathic treatment is superior. Some of
the results are very much surprising.
Homeopathic medicine is effective
and would revolutionize the mental disorder and
offer people a cost effective, less toxic and more
integral treatment. This would have immense implications
economically, socially, and politically.
Homeopathy restores health quickly,
gently and usually in a permanent fashion by stimulating
the body’s own healing capacity.
Unlike conventional medical treatments, homeopathy
has no side effects and the positive effects are
curative (to the extent the body is capable of
healing) – meaning that treatment need only to
proceed for a certain period only, after which
the patient no longer need use the homeopathic
remedy to remain healthy. This was demonstrated
in a 2008 study which followed 3,709 patients for
8 years. It found, “Patients who seek homeopathic
treatment are likely to improve considerably. These
effects maintain for as long as 8 years.”
For nearly thirty years as homeopathic
doctors, I have been extremely rewarded by using
homeopathy to help patients.
Children and adolescents diagnosed with a wide
range of behavioral, learning, and developmental
problems, respond very positively to homeopathic
treatment.
In our clinical experience, patients
generally enjoy positive, even dramatic, results
from homeopathic care.
In homeopathy we try to get the life story and
see how it has affected the person. We consider
the whole person. There is no distinction made
between physical, emotional, and mental health.
They are all linked. In homeopathy you look at
the whole picture.
Homeopathy is only treatment which gives high emphasis
on psychology and personality of the person to
be treated for all disease or complaint of the
body. It takes mind and body as a complete whole
– one unit. Its treatment of psychological complaints
is positive i.e. it not only relieves complaints
but also makes the person more functional to become
more adaptable and better equipped to handle stress
of life. Homeopathy understands and values person’s
minute feelings and also emotions. It takes feelings
and sensations as important messages of inner body
health. It ‘cures’ the root cause of psychological
complaint be it grief, disappointment or discord
in personal life. It can even resolve pent up emotions & bad
memories. It improves mental strength & functions
including thoughts, feelings, behavior, memory,
concentration etc. It is safe for all ages and
conditions. It has no side effects. It deal with
chemical imbalance in brain and brings that back
to normal.
HYPNOSIS
Hypnosis can be a highly effective form of treatment
for many mental, psychosomatic, and physical disorders.
Hypnosis is a trance state in which the hypnotized
person is in a heightened to more receptive state
of mind. During hypnosis, the patient is not unconscious,
does not lose control of his or her faculties.
Hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic
intervention.
A number of hypnotic techniques exist, combining
relaxation with imagery. People who undergo hypnosis
may achieve a trancelike state, similar to what
happens when they daydream or meditate. But hypnosis
is actually a heightened state of concentration.
The aim of hypnosis is to focus the mind to eliminate
distractions and make mind more open to therapeutic
suggestions.
The American Medical Association approved hypnosis
as a therapy in 1958. India has not recognized
hypnotherapy.
The result of hypnotherapy is overwhelmingly positive
and effective. Countless success stories exist
for benefits of this technique. Many people have
stopped smoking, lost weight, managed pain, remembered
forgotten information, stopped other addictions,
improved their health and so on through its use.
Hypnosis helps tremendously with many mental conditions.
Hypnosis offers moderate to major relief for many
types of pain. Hypnosis reduced anxiety levels
and lowered blood pressure in patients before surgery,
and enhanced recovery afterward by shortening hospital
stays and reducing complications
Depression, Eating disorders, Smoking, insomnia,
poor sexual function and stress-related problems
like hypertension, headache, or chronic pain problems
improve with hypnosis
But not enough psychiatrists, psychologists, and
psychotherapists use hypnosis or understand what
advantage hypnotherapy offers.
The hypnotic state allows people to explore painful
thoughts, feelings, and memories they might have
hidden from their conscious minds. In addition,
hypnosis enables person to perceive some things
differently.
Suggestion therapy in the hypnotic state makes
the person better able to respond to suggestions.
Therefore, hypnotherapy can help some people change
certain behaviors. It can also help people change
perceptions and sensations.
Analysis approach in hypnosis uses the relaxed
state to find the root cause of a disorder or symptom,
such as a traumatic past event that a person has
hidden in his or her unconscious memory. Once the
trauma is revealed other form of therapy can work
well.
The hypnotic state allows a person to be more open
to discussion and suggestion. It can improve the
success of other treatments for many conditions,
including: Phobias, fears, and anxiety - Sleep
disorders – Depression – Stress - Grief and loss.
Hypnosis also might be used to help with pain control
and to overcome habits, such as smoking or overeating.
It also might be helpful for people whose symptoms
are severe or who need crisis management.
Hypnosis, when using for therapeutic procedures,
can be a highly effective form of treatment for
many mental, psychosomatic, and physical disorders.
There are a number of techniques for correcting
dysfunctional behaviors such as self-destructive
and addictive habits like smoking, anxiety disorders,
and even managing side effects of various medical
treatments and procedures.
Hypnotherapy also works
well for any anxiety disorders and phobias and
has proven to be an effective treatment for depression.
Hypnotherapy was more effective at enhancing quality
of life and relieving anxiety and depressive symptoms.
NLP - NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING
Neuro-Linguistic Programming has the fundamental
dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic)
and how both affects our body and behavior (programming).
NLP re-programmes your brain so you think in another
way. Instead of concentrating on the problem, NLP
attempts to alter the thought processes that lead
to mental disorder. Once your brain has been retrained
to think differently, your actions will change
automatically.
NLP: THE FACTS
What's it best for?
The main point of NLP is that it allows the change
very quickly without needing years of therapy.
I promise results instantly or in just few sessions
only.
NLP gives thinking and an understanding of the
mind behind behavior.
NLP gives self-discovery, giving identity and mission.
It also provides a framework for understanding
and of human experience.
NLP is not only about
competence and excellence. It is about wisdom and
vision.
NLP has become famous for its different techniques
- there are techniques for changing and improving
behaviors.
NLP has literally spread around the world and has
touched the lives of millions of people. NLP cures
generative and systemic conditions and focuses
on high level issues of mind
NLP is capable of curing problems such as phobias,
depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses,
and learning disorders.NLP help people to have
better, fuller and richer lives.
NLP cures a broad range of physical and mental
conditions and learning difficulties, including
epilepsy, myopia and dyslexia - with its promises
to cure schizophrenia, depression, and post traumatic
stress disorder.
How is NLP meant to work?
NLP aim is to change negative perceptions into
positive ones. NLP helps mind to change the way
a client interprets their world. In this way, NLP
aims to reduce mental disorders.
How is NLP different from psychotherapy?
NLP and psychotherapy have totally different underlying
assumptions about the human mind and its connections.
NLP and psychology both have different methods,
different measures and different concepts of treating
the mental disorders.
NLP focus purely on results. It proposes that people
are not mentally diseased -- people work perfectly
to produce the good results they want to get.
Psychology has no integration or cure process.
NLP does not take long personal histories from
clients
So after
years of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis or psycho-pharmaceutical
treatment, while problems may have been explored
and brought to reduce their effects, a person is
still left with ongoing effect. Cure is often left
unfinished. In NLP there is so much more that can
be accomplished in far less time. NLP can have
an important and complete cure process while psychotherapy
has a point of no returns.
No behaviour of any individual is considered bad
or evil in NLP. Every behavior has a positive intention
and a useful purpose, even if it is presently in
a problematic way. Additionally, another new behaviour
can be created as needed and old behaviour can
be abolished.
We can move through any number of processes in
NLP for a cure of mental disorder such as emotional
support, creativity, healing, reality checking,
planning, critiquing, approving, action, etc.
NLP is Efficient
NLP has powerful tools to make positive changes
in personal history and its meaning -- without
drugs, hypnosis, or years of analysis.
